Tips on how to get your first IT role

Embarking on the journey of your career after graduation is an exhilarating experience. With high hopes and a revamped CV in hand, you eagerly start applying to your dream jobs, envisioning a seamless transition into the professional world. But then reality hits, and it hits hard.

I can relate to this all too well. Back in 2014, I found myself in a similar situation. I sent out countless applications, only to be met with silence and disappointment. It felt like my efforts were going unnoticed.

Amidst the struggles, two fortunate events changed the course of my career trajectory.

The first stroke of luck came when a university acquaintance introduced me to Wayne. It seemed like a chance encounter, a casual exchange of names. Little did I know that a few months later, fate would bring us together again in the library. Wayne approached me with an intriguing proposition - an opportunity to join a project within the university, working on upgrading their computers to Windows 8. Without hesitation, I seized the chance. Though the pay was not great but I considered it as an internship.

But the second stroke of luck was even more surprising. In the midst of my job applications, I started one, but for some reason, I didn’t complete it. Then, just a day before the position closed, I received a reminder email. Something inside me said, “Why not?” So, I decided to submit the application, almost forgetting about it immediately afterward.

Two months passed, and out of the blue, I received an invitation for an interview. To my surprise, I had completely forgotten about applying for this particular role. Frantically searching through my emails, I quickly refreshed my memory on the job description and requirements.

During the interview, I opted for honesty, sharing both my strengths and areas where I still had room to grow. To my delight, I was offered the position, with my one and only interview since graduating 😄

Reflecting on my experiences, I want to share some valuable tips that can help you navigate the early stages of your career:

  1. Showcase your passion: Undertake a side project that demonstrates your eagerness to learn and improve your skills. It’s a powerful way to exhibit your commitment to growth.

  2. Volunteer for experience: Consider volunteering for a few months to gain valuable hands-on experience. This initial entry on your CV can pave the way for future opportunities.

  3. Network, network, network: You never know when a simple “Hi” can lead to unexpected connections and potential job prospects. Attend events, join professional communities, and be open to building relationships.

  4. Harness the power of LinkedIn: Update your LinkedIn profile to reflect your skills and aspirations. Engage with others in your industry and share insightful content to establish yourself as an active professional.

  5. Experience versus certifications: While experience holds great value, certifications can also open doors, especially early in your career. Consider pursuing relevant certifications that align with your interests and goals.

  6. Embrace Honesty: Do yourself a favor and don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know.” I vividly recall asking my boss why I was chosen for the job, and his response perfectly encapsulated the power of honesty:

    “You were selected because you demonstrated the courage to admit what you didn’t know and showcased a genuine willingness to learn and grow.”

Remember, success often comes from a combination of preparation, perseverance, and a touch of luck. Keep pushing forward, stay motivated, and never underestimate the power of seizing unexpected opportunities. Your dream job may be just around the corner, waiting for the perfect moment to unveil itself.
